Presentation of: Abbaye de Nieul sur l'Autise
In the heart of a Petite Cité de Caractère, an architectural gem of exceptional quality, enhanced by a unique restoration, opens its doors to you for a visit on the borderline between the real and the virtual.
The abbey was founded no later than 1069 by the knight Airaud Gassedenier, loyal to the Count of Poitiers-Duke of Aquitaine. It enjoyed the protection of the Dukes of Aquitaine and was granted royal abbey status in 1141 by Eleanor of Aquitaine, then Queen of France.
Saint-Vincent Abbey is one of the few monastic complexes in Poitou to have survived almost intact, with its three components: church, convent buildings and the only Romanesque cloister in the west to have been preserved in its entirety.
July and August:
Summer show - Chants d'Ailes
Evening events: 24, 29 and 31 July and 5, 7, 12, 14 and 19 August
European Heritage Days: 20 and 21 September
